چکیده

We examine the Kosterlitz–Thouless universality class and show that conventional (essential) scaling at this type of phase transition is self–consistent only if modified by multiplicative logarithmic corrections. In the case of specific heat these logarithmic corrections are identified analytically. To identify those corresponding to the susceptibility we set up a numerical method involving the finite–size scaling of Lee–Yang zeroes. We also study the density of zeroes and introduce a new concept called index scaling. We apply the method to the XY –model and the closely related step model in two dimensions. The critical parameters (including logarithmic corrections) of the step model are compatable with those of the XY –model indicating that both models belong to the same universality class. This result calls into question the vortex binding scenario as the driving mechanism for the phase transition. Furthermore, the logarithmic corrections identified numerically are not in agreement with the renormalization group predictions of Kosterlitz and Thouless.

We examine the Kosterlitz–Thouless universality class and show that essential scaling at this type of phase transition is not self– consistent unless multiplicative logarithmic corrections are included. The Lattice Fermi Surface

The Nambu – Jona-Lasinio model in 2+1 dimensions is simulated for non-zero baryon chemical potential with a diquark source term. No evidence for a BCS condensate or gap is seen at high density; rather, critical behaviour with novel exponents is observed, suggesting that 2d superfluidity as first described by Kosterlitz and Thouless is realised, but with the universality class determined by the ...

Evidence for Kosterlitz-Thouless-type orientational ordering of CF3Br monolayers physisorbed on graphite

Monolayers of the halomethane CF3Br adsorbed on graphite have been investigated by x-ray diffraction. The layers crystallize in a commensurate triangular lattice. On cooling they approach a three-sublattice antiferroelectric pattern of the in-plane components of the dipole moments. The ordering is not consistent with a conventional phase transition, but points to Kosterlitz-Thouless behavior. I...

Superconductivity and Chiral Symmetry Breaking with Fermion Clusters

Cluster variables have recently revolutionized numerical work in certain models involving fermionic variables. This novel representation of fermionic partition functions is continuing to find new applications. After describing results from a study of a two dimensional Hubbard type model that confirm a superconducting transition in the Kosterlitz-Thouless universality class, we show how a cluste...

Analysis of Kosterlitz-Thouless transition models

We consider the "dielectric" form of the Kosterlitz-Thouless meaneld theory of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We show that this theory supports a continuum of essentially di erent versions, and that historically in uential arguments concerning the equivalence of these versions are in error. Simple universality requirements do not su ce to specify the theory. Within this framework, the well...
